Instructor Training

Are you looking for a career and would like a job that is fulfiling and rewarding? Would you like to meet new people everyday and be your own boss?

Have you considered training to become a driving instructor?

In order to become a driving instructor you must:

  • Hold a full British or Northern Ireland unrestricted car driving licence

  • Have held your full licence for 4 out of the last six years prior to entering the register after qualifying

  • Not have been disqualified from driving at any time within the 4 years prior to being entered on to the register

  • Be a fit and proper person to have your name entered on the register

  • Pass the register qualifying exam

  • To become a fully qualified driving instructor you will need to pass three separate exams.

Part 1 - Theory Test - Multiple Choice

    Only 3 attempts allowed.

This theory test is computer based (touch screen) and is made up of 100 questions which are all multiple choice.

The questions are set out into 4 bands:

  • Road Procedure.
  • Traffic signs and signals; Car control; Pedestrians; Mechanical knowledge.
  • Driving Test; Disabilities; Law.
  • Publications; Instructional techniques
  • Each band contains 25 questions.

To pass you must have a score of 80% or above in each band and achieve an overall pass mark of 85%.

    'Hazard Perception Test'

This is the second part of the theory test and consists of 14 individual video clips, 13 clips contain 1 major developing hazard and 1 clip contains 2 major developing hazards.

This part of the test is to assess your ability to see the hazardous situations and your response to these. You identify the developing hazards by clicking the mouse, the quicker you respond the higher the mark.

You must receive a pass mark of 57 or above out of a possible 75.

Please note:- You need to pass both parts of the theory test to obtain an overall pass for the part 1 exam. You will receive your results at the end of the tests.

Part 2 - The Advanced Driving Test

    Only 3 attempts allowed.

The driving test takes approximately 60 minutes including an eyesight test (you must be able to read a number plate at a distance of 27.5m).

You will also be asked the safety questions called "Show Me, Tell Me". These are grouped into a set of 5, 3 of which are "Tell Me" and 2 are "Show Me".

You will be tested on your general drive and 5 manoeuvres:

  • Left Reverse
  • Turn In The Road
  • Right Reverse
  • Reverse Park
  • Emergency Stop
  • The test will also include driving on a motorway or an "A" road if a motorway is unavailable.

You cannot accumulate more than 6 minor mistakes, e.g. not checking your mirrors before changing speed, to achieve a pass. You will receive your result at the end of the test.

After passing part 2 you can either move straight onto part 3 or choose to take the option of a trainee licence.

Part 3 - Instructional Ability Test

    Only 3 attempts allowed.

This test lasts for 60 minutes and is broken into 2 phases.

In the first phase the examiner acts the part of the "pupil" who will either be just starting to drive or a novice and you will be expected to teach this "pupil" a specific topic (e.g. Left reverse) to the standard required.

In the second phase the examiner plays the "pupil" who is nearing test standard but has a few "faults" in a specific area (e.g. Dealing with junctions). You will be expected to give the appropriate tuition to correct these "faults".

Both phase 1 and 2 of this test have to be passed in order to achieve a pass mark for part 3. Your results will be given to you at the end of the test.

Please note:- The length of time to complete all 3 stages depends on the DVA test waiting times, but once part 1 is completed you must qualify within a 2 year period.
